Gay Pride is a perfect moment for you, as a small business owner, to express your support for the LGBTQ+ community by celebrating equality and promoting your establishment as a welcoming environment for all. Continue reading for some tips on how to honour Pride.
What exactly is pride?
The 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan — a seminal event for the Gay Liberation Movement – is commemorated on ‘Gay Pride Day’ (or ‘Christopher Street Day.’) In June 1969, police invaded the Stonewall Inn, one of New York’s most popular homosexual clubs. Many LGBTQ+ people were arrested and held, and word of the raid circulated the city, sparking a large demonstration that lasted into the following week. Even though this wasn’t the first revolt, many saw it as a watershed moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
The inaugural UK Gay Pride Rally took place in London on July 1, 1972, a date was chosen since it was the closest Saturday to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in 1969, and roughly 2,000 people attended. Since then, the event has expanded to other locations across the United Kingdom, undergone multiple name changes, and grown in size to hundreds of thousands of people. Since then, Pride has expanded to include all members of the LGBTQ+ community, assisting in the celebration and awareness of all voices represented by the rainbow flag. Although London is the greatest celebration, there are innumerable others across the UK, with Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester, and Birmingham being the largest (after London).
Pride has grown into a month-long festival that raises awareness for the ongoing efforts in cities around the world to achieve equal rights, equal opportunity, and justice for the LGBTQ+ population. Many countries declare June to be Global Pride Month, however, festivities in the UK typically take place from July to September. Pride Events UK maintains a calendar of Pride celebrations in towns and cities across the UK that you may use to find your local event.
What does being an ally entail?
Whether you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, you can be an ally. Begin by learning about the history of LGBTQ+ discrimination, current battles, and how this community want to be recognised now. Seek out LGBTQ+-created literature and entertainment, and speak up if you see misrepresentation or offensive jokes (on social media or in real life). Instead of making assumptions about someone’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or preferred pronouns, commit to being open-minded, willing to ask questions, and learning more to become a greater ally.
As a small business owner, make sure your staff and customers are aware that your establishment is a safe space year-round, not just during Pride. We’ve seen signs that say things like “Love Wins,” “A safe area for all,” and “All identities are welcome here” at small companies. Consider putting a similar message in your shop window, your website’s “About” page, or your social network bio. And make it apparent throughout the year.
During Pride celebrations, how can LGBTQ+ business owners market their small businesses?
Summer is a terrific time to show off your pride if you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Take advantage of this opportunity to engage with your customers and provide them with a better picture of who you are as a business owner, artist, and individual.
Also, search for LGBTQ+-specific marketing opportunities during July, August, and September. Promote your products and services to a supportive audience, whether it’s a cyber marketplace or a local festival.
Small business owners can celebrate Pride in three ways:
1. Wear your pride with pride.
For the summer, add a Pride design or a limited-edition rainbow logo treatment to your employee uniform. Add a design to be loud (and proud) while showing your support for the LGBTQ+ community, whether it’s on T-shirts, face masks, stickers, or badges.
2. Decorate the outside of your store.
Decorate your shop’s exterior for the summer. To celebrate Pride, be creative with banners, posters, and plastic signs to let clients know you’re an LGBTQ+ small business owner or ally. Show your support with something a little more discreet, like a window decal, all year long (or two).
3. Make your consumers aware of your pride.
If you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community who owns a small company, invite your customers to join you in celebrating. Send an email newsletter outlining your connection to the cause so that others may get a better sense of who you are.
This is your chance to speak up if you’re not a member of the LGBTQ+ community but identify as an ally. Use an Instagram post or an in-store poster to let your customers know where you stand. Send thank-you messages to consumers who supported your fundraising efforts and package orders with “Proud Ally” or “Love Wins” stickers.
In 2021, there will be four methods to commemorate Pride.
- Wear a T-shirt or a sticker to show your support.
- Create a Pride-themed homepage for your website.
- Decorate your storefront with banners, posters, and other items.
- Inform your customers about your allyship.
