Whether you’re creating a programme for an event, an information booklet, a magazine, a reference book, or even a novel, booklet printing is a great method to get your message across.
Many people are unaware that there are many different types of booklet printing, so we’ve put together an exhaustive guide on booklet printing to assist you to choose the right one for your project.
What can booklet printing be used for?
Booklet printing is a method of producing any book, magazine, or document. There are two very common forms of binding used in booklet printing, each with its own set of benefits.
Booklets with saddle stitching
Saddle-stitched books have staples (or wires) along the folded spine that hold the pages together. Saddle-stitched books are a popular choice amongst businesses since they look professional and are inexpensive. If your booklet has more than 40 pages, it will likely be squared off the spine to give it a better finish and prevent it from bursting open.
Among the applications are:
Brochures, catalogues, event programmes, bulletins, and information booklets are all examples of printed materials.
Pages
Saddle-stitched booklets are ideal for documents ranging in length from eight to 64 pages.
Hints & suggestions
The majority of people and businesses utilise 150gsm internal sheets and 250gsm cover paper with lamination on the outside. If your booklet is longer than 28 pages, we recommend using 130gsm for the inside pages.
Saddle-stitched booklets are produced from folded spreads, so keep that in mind. Because each spread is folded into four printed pages, the total number of pages must be four.
Send your artwork as a multi-page PDF (upload your PDF on our product page) saved as single pages, starting with the cover (page one) and ending with the last page of your book, including any blank pages that will appear in the final product.
Bound books
Single leaves are stacked in a squared-off block, then glued together along the back border of the pages to create perfect bound books. The cover is then wrapped around the spine and glued in place. An adhesive that is both strong and flexible is commonly used, which also makes it temperature resistant. This allows you to open your book completely without the spine shattering or the pages getting loose or tumbling out.
Perfect binding creates professional books or papers that are totally flat when closed, and they are printed on the spine as well, making them ideal for both display and stacking.
Among the applications are:
Annual or corporate reports, brochures, journals, educational materials, reference volumes, and novels are all examples of this type of publication.
Pages
Perfect bound books have the advantage of being able to accommodate any book or document ranging in length from 28 to 700 pages. Everything is perfect bound, from magazines to best-selling novels.
Hints & suggestions
You’ll need to provide one PDF for the inside covers and another for the interior pages because the cover and inner pages are printed independently. Save the cover as a flat spread with a spine, and the internal pages as a multi-page PDF saved in running order as single pages. Because perfect bound books do not open fully flat, leave at least 12mm between the text and the interior of each page next to where it will be bound on your artwork.
