Not everyone is an expert in the field of printing. If you’re in business, you probably know how to order a print, but at The Print Hive, we understand that many of our clients aren’t comfortable with the process and aren’t sure how to ensure that their design prints are precise as they want it. That’s why we made sure to create a website that’s extremely user-friendly and makes ordering your printed job one step at a time a breeze.
However, we understand that the procedure and variety of options might be overwhelming, and you don’t want to risk your print, so check out our step-by-step guide to the digital printing process.
Select a product.
Click the Products tab on our homepage, www.theprinthive.co.uk, to identify the product you need. If you don’t see what you’re looking for right away, type the product’s name into the search field. You’ll be led to a page with a couple of words explaining the product and your options (or the options available if there are more than one). You can get the specific template for your task by viewing the bleed, trim, and safe regions (more on these later).
Select your product’s features.
Size, orientation (landscape or portrait), and one-sided or double-sided printing are all options depending on the product. Other options relevant to the product you’ve chosen may appear. They’ll be clearly labelled, so just click on the one you want and move on to the next.
After you’ve made your choices, simply upload your artwork, and proceed with payment as normal.
After you’ve double-checked your artwork, upload it.
Your artwork must be print-ready, so we’ve made it simple for you to double-check that everything is saved correctly. We recommend visiting our support page if you haven’t had much experience producing print-ready artwork. This will instruct you on how to ensure that your artwork is print-ready. We recommend that you upload print-ready PDF files. A checklist is available to assist you. We can also print from Microsoft Office documents like Word and Publisher, as well as a variety of picture formats, although we may need to provide you with a PDF proof for approval. Before we start printing, we’ll put your order on hold until you approve it. Any delays will always be communicated to you.
It’s critical to double-check a few items before uploading, whether you’re using a template or your own artwork:
Have you incorporated crop marks into your work?
Make sure your artwork is the correct size and that crop marks are included. We’ll use these marks to trim your printed page.
Is there any bleed in your artwork?
The space outside the trimmed page’s edge is known as bleed. If your colours, photos, or graphics stretch all the way to the edge of your printed page, you must extend them 3mm beyond the edge of the page into the bleed region. During the printing process, the paper can shift somewhat in the press with any job. Your bleed ensures that there are no fine white lines at the page’s edge when it is printed and cut to size.
Ensure that all key aspects of your artwork are contained within the safe region. Text, important information, logos, and any other elements that aren’t designed to bleed off the page should be kept at least 5mm from the page’s trimmed edge. When the printed page is trimmed, anything that is too close to the edge risks being trimmed into or chopped off.
Is the size and resolution of all of your photographs correct?
If your artwork contains any images, make sure they’re high-resolution and saved in CMYK mode at the size they’ll appear. Some colours may appear differently when you convert a picture from RGB to CMYK, so be sure you convert photographs before making any colour alterations. If the resolution is too low, an image that looks fine online or on your screen may appear blurry or pixelated when printed. Save at 300 dpi and keep in mind that the more you enlarge an image, the lower the quality will be in print, thus use photographs at 100% size.
Make a print-ready copy of your artwork.
Ensure that your artwork is in CMYK colour space. If it isn’t, we’ll convert it, but certain colours may appear faded or altered. Ensure that any black lettering is completely black and not a mixture of CMYK colours. This will eliminate any registration issues that may arise while working with small fonts. Finally, make a high-resolution PDF copy of your artwork. Save your document into readable spreads if it is multi-paged. It must be saved as single pages, starting on Page 1 and ending on the last page, to be printed. If you’re ordering books, the multi-page PDF should contain any blank pages in the order you wish them to appear in the printed book.
