Business After Pandemic – Improving Employee Engagement

To suggest that the current workplace is not the same as it was in February 2020 is an understatement. Some people have jokingly called this the ‘business pandemic’, and we fully understand why. We’re not sure how many employees would believe you if you took them back to a pre-COVID lockdown workplace and showed them how they’d work after the pandemic. Not only has it accelerated the trend of working from home – which was already on the rise – but we’ve also had to deal with furloughs, wage freezes, and even job losses as a result of Coronavirus’s effects.

Furthermore, many people have opted to utilise the pandemic as an opportunity to start their own business. Starting a business in a pandemic may not be the best idea, however, many businesses have succeeded by launching their businesses online during a time we could not leave the house. Businesses booming when they implement a change in their marketing to accommodate for the coronavirus.

Now we’re back at work, what effect has Furlough had on employers?

The government’s furlough programme has been a godsend for many businesses struggling to pay their employees during the pandemic, this has made managing business during global pandemic a lot easier. Furlough was even extended until September 2021, so we’ve now moved past it. Business after the pandemic has been easier to continue from due to companies not having been made bankrupt, thanks to furlough.

Furlough permitted firms to place employees on temporary leave and pay them 80% of their earnings, which saves a lot of money for enterprises in financial distress.

According to Statista, 1.3 million employees have been furloughed as of March 15th, 2021, therefore it’s a common occurrence. From a recent poll found online, 37% of respondents said they had been furloughed at some point since the scheme began in March.

Many respondents in this poll (20%) were furloughed at the time of the study, although the majority (35%) had been furloughed for 1-6 months. Almost a quarter of those furloughed had been on leave for more than six months. Business after pandemic has returned somewhat to ‘normal’, and people seem happy to be back at work, socialising with friends and co-workers again.

Employees’ feelings regarding furlough were seemingly largely influenced by how engaged they were with their work even while on leave.

Only 21% thought their employer did enough to keep them engaged from home, while a third of workers (33%) were underwhelmed by their business’s attempts to stay in touch during furlough vacation during the lockdown.

The lockdown is finished, now what?

This doesn’t bode well for employers, as 33 per cent of employers isn’t doing enough to remain in touch with furloughed employees, and up to 49 per cent of the workforce may be looking for work.

It’s not too late, though, to change your employees’ thoughts by implementing a fresh retention plan that prioritises what they desire.

Now we’re all back to “normal” and resuming work, consider providing options for employees to continue working from home. It saves office space, electricity, money and other investments. As well as that, your employees get to work in the comfort of their own homes.
